Hahnemuhle etching 140Lbs Not
Once I'd settled on the idea of the image, Forshore Football, it was time for research, what I discovered is both tragic and very comendable.
I had wrongly assumed that the Fishermen & Firemen refered to two different elements of the town, in fact it refers to the deck hands and the stokers onboard a ship. The charity football match between to rivals ( with hats) was started after a huge storm in which the crew of a local trawler perished, the football match attracted lots of local viewers who would donate odd coppers to the charity which helped those in need locally.
Dwarfed by the castle, the match is played on boxing day, they still collect money for the needy. I love the tradition of it, the meaningfull aspect of the whole event. It needed to be included in my very personal Alphabet of Scarborough.
