Construction began in 1863, the hotel opened on 24th July 1887.
It was at the time the largest brick building in Europe, designed by Hull architect Cuthbert Brodrick.
The hotel was designed on the theme of time,
4 towers = the seasons,
12 floors = months
52 chimneys = weeks
365 bedrooms = days
The overall shape being in a 'V' in honour of Queen Victoria. During the bombardment by the German navy the hotel was hit 30 times on 16th December 1914.

This limited edition book will only be printed and bound in 26 copies. In addition each image will be available as a limited edition print of 26 copies. 4 wood engravings, 24 etchings, 2 engravings, 1 large lino print.
The book when bound will be approximately 41 x 27.5 cms in size. Each page is hand printed onto an A2 sized piece of paper which is then folded in half. 1st page has the Title of the page; 'A is for Art Gallery', page 2 is printed with the text about the subject, Page 3 is the image and Page 4 is blank, leading to the next set of pages.
Smith Settle of Yeadon, Nr Leeds, expert bookbinders have been commissioned to bind the completed book. 1/4 leather spine with gold blocking, coloured headbands, indented title to front cover. Specially designed end papers to compliment the book. The whole housed in a matching solander box.
