Micklegate Bar is the most important and famous of York's medieval stone gateways, known for its royal pageantry and grim history of displaying the heads of executed traitors. The lower section of the bar dates from the 12th century, with the top two stories added in the 14th century.

Royal entrance: Historically, Micklegate Bar was the main entry point to the city for anyone arriving from the south. By tradition, monarchs entering York through this gate would be met by the Lord Mayor, who would formally offer the city's sword. At least six reigning monarchs have passed through this gate, including King Edward IV and King Henry VII.
