York Minster, formally the "Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York", is an Anglican cathedral in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. The minster is the seat of the archbishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England, and is the mother church for the diocese of York and the province of York.[5] It is administered by its dean and chapter. The minster is a Grade I listed building and a scheduled monument.
The first record of a church on the site dates from 627, the title 'minster' also dates to the Anglo-Saxon period. The East window depicts the Last Judgement and is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world.
When I visit York I'm usually drawn to the bookshop
(left side in my picture) where I have purchased in the past several Claire Leighton wood engravings and many interesting books.
'York Minster' has been selected to be part of the 88th Annual Exhibition by the Society of Wood Engravers to take part in 2026. This is a touring exhibition, ( normally six different venues throughout the whole of 2026) starting at Bankside Gallery, London on February 3rd, Private View 7th February.
